Key Verse : “And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding” (Jeremiah 3:15).
The Pastor’s office is a symbol of a shepherd of God’s flock. There, sermons are prepared to feed the congregation; the work of the church is co-ordinated so that believers may live and bear fruit in service, fellowship, teaching and witnessing; and the way of salvation is shown to people seeking God.
People generally expect the minister to have the sermonic skill of a Fosdick, the oratorical power of a Churchill, the personal charm of a movie hero, the psychological magnet of a friend, the organizing and administrative ability of an Eisenhower, the wisdom of Socrates and the patience of Job. He is also required to be versatile in handling array of issues that touch on the sensibilities of all segments of the church.
The office of the pastor is pivotal to the accomplishment of God’s heart-cry of restoration of His people to fellowship and communion. Israel had forsaken the true God like a treacherous wife would abandoned a loving husband. Yet, God did not give up on them. He passionately desired their restoration as we see in our text today. He promised to give them pastors according to His own heart.
Pastoral priority is to feed the flock with knowledge of God’s word and way. This is necessary because the members of the church always look up to their leaders for guidance and direction. If leaders do not follow God or depend on Him, they will lead the congregation astray.
Our prayer therefore should be for God to raise and sustain leaders who will guide His people with godly fear.
Thought for the Day : A minister is he who serves, not he who is served.
